Neela Ramgopal
Carnatic vocalist
Studentship/gurusBorn on 25’th May 1935 in a traditional south Indian family promoting culture as a requisite.Smt.Neela was initiated to learn carnatic music under the formal guidance of Sri.Sadagopalachari in Kumbakonam,south India.She engrossed herself more deeply in the field of carnatic music and she subsequently learnt from late Sri.N.M.Narayanan a family friend and music critic. She has been a student with illustrious voicalist sangitha bhushanam late Sri.T.K.Rangachary who was well known for the rich bhava and fidelity to the classical virtues,in his school of music. Recordings:The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan have recorded her rendition of Sri.Muthuswamy Dixitar’s Navagraha kritis. She has also presented carnatic music in some commercial recordings. “AIR” Grading:Smt.Neela has been performing in the All India Radio since 1965.She has been a A-grade artist.She has been elevated to “A TOP”ranking from May 2003,by the AIR. State and National BroadcastsThe AIR has been proud in presenting her in their many programmes of carnatic music like: The doorarshan Kendra has
featured her programmes from their studios in A thematic programme on “Composers of Kerala” directed by her and broadcast from AIR, Bangalore received a Special award for the year 2008. Performances:
Smt. Neela Ramgopal has been a regular performer of concerts all over the country. She has performed in all major sabhas of Karnataka,T.N,A.P,Mumbai,Kerala,Delhi etc.She is also a regular performer in Chennai during the December music festival in many sabhas there.She had a successful 16 week tour of USA giving performance a well as teaching carnatic music. Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan(London,UK) sponsored her to teach, conduct workshops and perform to the students there in 2005 and in 2007 in their summer school as part of their cultural activities. Smt.Neela has been encouraging young talent by teaching students of carnatic music.Many of her students are performing artists.They have been recognized by major organizations in the state. Neela Ramgopal is also conducting online music lessons for music students as may be required by them. Neelambari is an organisation of the students of Neela Ramgopal. Neelambari has recorded the 72 Melakartha krithis of different composers rendered by Neela Ramgopal for the benefit of the students of music. These Melakartha krithis have been rendered with the Ragaalapana and Swaraprastaram for their full understanding. These melakartha krithis have been published as 19 cds and released during a function organized by Neelambari in 2005. Promotion:Smt.Neela has conducted many workshops and lecture demonstrations in various aspects of carnatic music.She has specifically presented the following: 1.Sri.Muthuswamy Dikhshitar’s Navagraha Krithis 2. Sri.Muthuswamy Dikhshitar’s rare compositions. 3.Sri.Shyama Shastri’s compositions on goddess MEENAKSHI 4.Smt.Ambujam Krishna’s compositions 5.Raga Darshini programme at the Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, 6.A special talk in the dept. of
music in 7.She has conducted workshop at 8.She has conducted a workshop –lasting several weeks to teach MELA RAGA KRITHIS of various composers. 9. “Raga anubhava”series for better appreciation of the classical content in the carnatic music is also being implemented on a continuous basis. Addendum:Her teaching encompasses all aspects of music that a student should learn.Delineating the structure of the ragam,its limiting contours,the neraval and swaraprastaram aspects that brings out the sahitya bhava integrated with the raga bhava,the lakshiya/lakshana aspects in the rendering of shastriya music are conveyed.The student is encouraged to sing along and to sing alone during teaching session.She has encouraged her students sing along with her during concerts. Everyday is a busy day, with an individual attention to every student. |
